Very good 2-staple binding. 10 ¾ x 8 ¼, 28 pages, 3 ounces XX Part 63 of THE HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: Three more articles in the pre-D-Day series look at the organization behind the Normandy landings. On the eve of Operation Overlord the Allies had amassed 50,000 men for the spearhead assault, to be followed by 2,000,000 more. But without Allied supremacy in armor and control of the air above the battlefield, the whole operation could result in catastrophe. The task was enormous and so were the arguments over how it was to be carried out. Important weapons in the Allied arsenal were the strange, armored vehicles called The Funnies. Among the numerous B/W and color photographs and illustrations in this issue are: a panoramic view of some of the Allied troops and armored vehicles ready for invasion, huge number of American Sherman tanks and Thunderbolt planes, Eisenhower watching a pre-invasion training exercise, Sherman Firefly tank, Sturmpanzer IV tank, JAGD-Panther tank, Funnies (?armor specially adapted to deal with various types of obstacles, Duplex Drive, Bobbin, Crab, Churchill AVRE, Armoured Bulldozer, Churchill Crocodile), weaponry (Panzerschreck rocket-launcher, PIAT anti-tank launcher), Major-General P.C.S. Hobart (designer of the Funnies), Lancaster planes in flight, B-17 Flying Fortresses in flight, Martin B-26 Marauder, North American B-25 Mitchell, De Havilland Mosquito Mk XVIII, aerial views of devastation from Allied bombs. There are various maps and charts. Very good 2-staple binding. 10 ¾ x 8 ¼, 28 pages, 3 ounces XX Part 62 of THE HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: Genesis of the plans for the D-Day Invasion. Experts write about the strengths and weapons each side could muster for this, the most crucial single event of the Second World War. Hitler boasted of building the ?Atlantic Wall,? against which the invading Allies were intended to dash themselves into ruin. The ?Wall?, despite Rommel?s frantic efforts, existed only in the Pas de Calais. There are also articles on England before D-Day, the build-up of American troops in the UK, Mulberries (strange floating shapes of concrete and steel), and G.I. Jargon (slang). Among the numerous B/W and color photographs and illustrations in this issue are: Allied generals preparing for Project Overlord (early name for invasion of Europe), assembly lines in England, African-American soldiers demonstrating ?jazz marching,? Mulberries, stockpile of bombs, some of the 7000 invasion ships (minesweeper, Liberty ship, armed salvage tug, RAF air/sea rescue launch, armed trawler), cartoon of Yanks at Piccadilly Circus, RAF dispersal area full of Dakotas, Germany?s big coastal guns in France, bunkers on Atlantic coast, landing-craft traps, German Kampfgruppe on march, and inside a German Coastal 155mm gun emplacement. There are various maps and charts.
