Sir James Edward Smith (1759 - 1828) British botanist, founding member and President of the Linnean Society; this was his ".most successful work.which passed through six editions during the author's lifetime." (G. S. Boulger, revised by Margot Walker in the ODNB). Bookplates on the front endpaper of the Kennebec Natural History and Antiquarian Society (and in turn loaned by their Trustees to) the Cony Female Academy in Augusta. Laid-in is a page of hand-written notes, contemporary with the publication, on very good quality paper. Approx. 5 1/2" x 9 1/2" size; bound in plain gray-brown paper covered boards & spine. Some edge, tips wear and rubbing to the binding; bottom spine end chipped away; occasional spotting & foxing. In good condition.
