Interior is clean and bright throughout, with unmarked text and firm binding, free of inscriptions and stamps. Gentle handling wear only. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This is a rigorous and foundational work in the field of quantum optics and atomic physics, offering a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding the interaction between laser fields and atomic systems. Originally published in response to the rapid growth of laser technologies and their applications, this second edition integrates numerous developments in both theory and experiment - especially in multiphoton ionization and laser-induced scattering processes. The book presents a progression from basic quantum electrodynamics to advanced models of laser-atom interactions, including coherent states, dressed atoms, and multiphoton ionization under intense fields. What sets Mittleman's approach apart is the clarity with which complex quantum-mechanical formalism is connected to practical phenomena such as spontaneous emission, laser trapping, ionization thresholds, and atomic deflection. Notably, the text includes detailed treatments of scattering (both electron-atom and atom-atom) in the presence of strong optical fields - areas of importance in the era of ultracold atoms and optical lattices. The text balances mathematical rigour with physical intuition, offering a bridge between semi-classical approximations and fully quantized field treatments. Additionally, it includes discussion of numerical methods like Floquet theory, essential for solving time-periodic Hamiltonians in laser physics. This book is particularly relevant for researchers and advanced students in atomic, molecular, and optical physics, especially those engaged with the control and manipulation of quantum states via laser technologies. Many of the challenges addressed - such as gauge choice, adiabatic switching, and transition probabilities - remain central in ultrafast and nonlinear optics, attosecond science, and high-intensity field physics. The volume's detailed attention to gauge invariance, statistical descriptions of lasers, and its discussion of experimental comparability make it a valuable resource in designing and interpreting experiments in both fundamental and applied settings.

I am indebted to Professor F. Brouillard and the DYMO group at that institution for the stimulation and hospitality provided during that period. In both cases, the lectures were at a level that assumed only a knowledge of elementary quantum mechanics of a typical first-year grad uate course. I have tried to continue that level of discussion in this book and to make it self-contained for any discussions that go beyond that level. In some sections of the book, the problems dealt with are too complicated to provide the entire description here. In that case, references to the original work are given.
