Jack Miner first published this book privately in Canada. The book's unexpected success resulted in subsequent commercial editions. Miner was a countryman and, amongst other things, professional wildfowler ('market gunner') who studied his surroundings in detail. His experiments with habitat management and raising wild birds lead to him establishing his famous Miner Bird Sanctuary in Western Ontario. .

Sound and square binding in cloth-covered boards. Light wear to the corners and spine ends. Text block edges are lightly toned. Previous owner had taped several newsclippings to the rear endpapers, which have become detached and left tape shadow marks. Clippings have been left laid in. Otherwise, the inside pages are clean and unmarked. Dust jacket has heavy edge wear; including small and large chips, short and long tears, and creases. One long tear has been cello tape reinforced on reverse side. A few tiny holes in the spine. Light soil overall. Jack Miner's story of his bird sanctuary and knowledge of and relationship with birds. Illustrated with black and white photographs.
