An interesting work of science fiction from London in which a prisoner withstands the torture of being laced in a straitjacket by entering a trance-like state and inhabiting past lives. The "Jacket" was a real device employed at San Quentin which London learned about through interviews with the inmate Ed Morrell. Blind-ruled green cloth with gilt lettering to spine, pp. [iv], 333, [1], [34 ads] + illustrated frontis.; Very Good condition with fading to spine and a small split to cloth at head of spine, light rubbing to edges, light foxing to fore-edge and first few pages, a couple small chips and creases to corners of end ads, ownership signature penned to ffep. [Sisson & Martens p. 81] Provenance: From the estate of family friend and Jack London scholar Katherine Mather Littell Jr. (1936-2003).
