Paperback. Etat : Good. America Afire is the powerful story of the election of 1800, arguably the most important election in America's history and certainly one of the most hotly disputed. Former allies Adams and Jefferson, president versus vice president, Federalist versus Republican, squared off in a vicious contest that resulted in broken friendships, scandals, riots, slander, and jailings in the fourth presidential election under the Constitution. The election of 1800 (not unlike that of 2000) was a tumultuous one, replete with an attempt to steal the victory from a controversial winner; deadlocked parties hell-bent on success; and a nation divided. Thomas Jefferson vs. John Adams--one of the most slanderous campaigns in the history of the nation. Added to that were backroom connivings and threatened riots serious enough to badly bend a young and shaky electoral system. The election ended in a tie--between the Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates. After 7 straight days of voting in the Congress, Jefferson finally became president. America Afire is a timely tale that not only enlightens and entertains, but reassures us of the continuity and durability of our institutions.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. It is 1806; a powerful and criminal secret society has almost complete control over many of the elected officials, international finance, and commerce in the young nation. Its leaders arrange for a dissident to be brutally murdered and left floating in the Potomac River so that the body surfaces within clear site of Thomas Jefferson's White House. This criminal act is intended to send a message to the President and all those around him: 'the society's power should know no limit - elected officials - including the president - must acknowledge and support us, allow us to do whatever we want, when and wherever we choose, or suffer the consequences'.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Authors pray for a Tweet like this: Can't sleep TJ, Rachel & Me has taken over my body & mind like no book before. Will it be a movie? Thanks for this work. - Roma Prindle, July 17, 2012. Thank you Roma, whoever you are. Maybe you're prescient In August 2013, a major Beverly Hills agency somehow discovered this needle in a haystack and asked the author if the TV/film rights were available. So maybe someday (yes, it's quite the crapshoot) this book will make it to the screen. Why not read it now, before it's famous? Polished and slightly revised in September, 2013 -- in part to reflect the destruction of the big tulip poplar in the angle of Monticello's north pavilion. The story: What if Thomas Jefferson returned to life, penniless, powerless, and without a single slave? What if he meets a beautiful mixed-race woman he takes to be Sally Hemings reborn? What if he lands in a psycho ward or meets the President - at an Independence Day citizenship ceremony at his own hilltop home, Monticello, no less? Selected a favorite book of 2012 by the staff of the Urbana Free Library, made a Critics' Pick by Kirkus Reviews in its May 2012 national print edition and given 5 stars by the on-line San Francisco Book Review in March 2012, Thomas Jefferson, Rachel & Me is a tale told by retired history teacher, Jack Arrowsmith, a man numbed by the deaths of his wife and son. It's about his - and his late son's girlfriend, Rachel Carter's - adventures with the writer of the Declaration of Independence. They meet the ghost of Jefferson at Monticello and, fighting off their panic, agree to take him off to see America. A history grad student at Columbia, Rachel knows secrets about Jack's son and wife that she decides Jack must know. They will turn his world upside down, just as Rachel's world will be changed forever by her evolving relationship with Jefferson. Dazzled by Rachel, Jefferson regains the vigor of his prime as the trio travels together. But what then? For all its fast pace and humor, Thomas Jefferson, Rachel & Me is a story about hauntings and history. It's about love and friendship, grief and loss, family secrets, and America's own denial of its past. This is a story that will stay with you long after its bittersweet finale. Here's a recent comment (January 2012) from a reader completely unknown to the author: Upon receiving this book as a gift I was told by the presenter that it was one of the better books they had read this year. I couldn't agree more. The story is moving, the characters are well developed and likable, even in their not-so-best moments. The author certainly humanized a pivotal American figure for me, even if it is the author's take on his personality. It serves as a nice reminder that these men and women were human as well, for all our faults and talents. I would definitely recommend this book. Here's what another reader said: I read your book in three sittings, which surely tells you that I couldn't put it down. After the first chapter, I was hooked and when it ended, I wanted more. Your writing, especially your descriptions, is beautiful. Talk about using words precisely and effectively. I could see Charlottesville and Monticello and wanted to go back (especially to Fleurie, which must be new since my days). I also need to take that evening tour at Monticello. The dialogue was great, believable. Parts made me laugh. Your characters interested me, amazed me, surprised me, made me sad. I was fascinated by how you built the story, how the characters developed, how your imagination worked. I was intrigued by how much real history was there without any sense of a history lesson. And of course the Jefferson questions are irresistible. It was fun to read your book after having just read 'The Hemingses of Monticello' this winter. In short, WOW.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. Recent biographies of Thomas Jefferson have stressed the sphinxlike puzzles of his character -- famous champion of freedom yet lifelong slaveholder, foe of Miscegenation yet secret lover of a beautiful slave for thirty years, aristocrat yet fervent advocate of government by the people. E. M. Halliday's absorbing, compact, and lucid portrait recognizes these and other puzzles about this great founder, but shows us how understandable they can be in the light of his personal and social circumstances and common human experience. Here are all the pivotal episodes of Jefferson's life: the writing of the Declaration of Independence, his years in Paris, his feud with Alexander Hamilton, the surprising Louisiana Purchase, and his post presidential reconciliation with John Adams. But Halliday's account takes readers deeper, into Jefferson's personal, private life, exploring his childhood, his literary taste, and his unconventional religious thinking and moral philosophy. Here, too, are his adamant opinions on women, the evolution of his ideas on democracy and freedom of expression, and fresh insights into his long relationship with Sally Heimings.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. On June 4, 1781 Thomas Jefferson fled Monticello mere minutes ahead of the British soldiers rushing to capture him. He nearly became the most valuable American prisoner of the Revolutionary War: his life - and the momentum of the entire war - balanced on a razor's edge. In Flight from Monticello, Michael Kranish illuminates the central importance of this harrowing moment to Jefferson's life and to the fate of the young nation. Flight from Monticello is a sweeping narrative of clashing armies, of spies, intrigue, desperate decisions, and gut-wrenching battles. In vivid, precisely observed scenes, Kranish captures the tumultuous outbreak of war, the local politics guiding Jefferson's actions in the Continental Congress, and his rise to become the second governor of Virginia. A lifelong belief in the corrupting influence of a powerful executive led Jefferson to argue for a weak governorship, one that lacked the means to raise an adequate army. The state was thus woefully unprepared for the invading British troops who sailed up the James under the direction of a recently turned Benedict Arnold. Facing only rag-tag resistance, the British force took Virginia with little trouble. George Washington, alarmed that his home state - and with it, the nation - might have fallen to the British, began preparations for the historic confrontation at Yorktown. Kranish describes Jefferson's struggle to respond to the invasion and paints an intimate and compelling portrait, illuminating Jefferson's quiet conversations, his family turmoil, and his private hours at Monticello. Jefferson would be haunted for the rest of his life by his actions as governor, and his career was dogged by accusations of wartime incompetence. The lessons he learned during those dark hours would have a profound and lasting influence on his political thinking, and on the nature of the American presidency. Flight from Monticello sheds new light on a little-known yet momentous time in Jefferson's life - and in the birth of America.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. In the early nineteenth century Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, conceived the idea of extracting a gospel purified of what he saw as extraneous philosophical, mythological, and theological elements. To do so, he took verses from the four canonical gospels and arranged them into a single narrative, focusing on the actual words of Jesus. This work was never published during Jefferson's lifetime, but was inherited by his grandson and printed for the first time in the early twentieth century. The original bound manuscript, often referred to as the Jefferson Bible, is held by the United States National Museum in Washington.…

Hardback. Etat : Fair. When Thomas Jefferson wrote his epitaph, he listed as his accomplishments his authorship of the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia statute of religious freedom, and his founding of the University of Virginia. He did not mention his presidency or that he was second governor of the state of Virginia, in the most trying hours of the Revolution. Dumas Malone, author of the epic six-volume biography, wrote that the events of this time explain Jefferson's character as a man of action in a serious emergency. Joseph Ellis, author of American Sphinx, focuses on other parts of Jefferson's life but wrote that his actions as governor toughened him on the inside. It is this period, when Jefferson was literally tested under fire, that Michael Kranish illuminates in Flight from Monticello. Filled with vivid, precisely observed scenes, this book is a sweeping narrative of clashing armies--of spies, intrigue, desperate moments, and harrowing battles. The story opens with the first murmurs of resistance to Britain, as the colonies struggled under an onerous tax burden and colonial leaders--including Jefferson--fomented opposition to British rule. Kranish captures the tumultuous outbreak of war, the local politics behind Jefferson's actions in the Continental Congress (and his famous Declaration), and his rise to the governorship. Jefferson's life-long belief in the corrupting influence of a powerful executive led him to advocate for a weak governorship, one that lacked the necessary powers to raise an army. Thus, Virginia was woefully unprepared for the invading British troops who sailed up the James under the direction of a recently turned Benedict Arnold. Facing rag-tag resistance, the British force took the colony with very little trouble. The legislature fled the capital, and Jefferson himself narrowly eluded capture twice. Kranish describes Jefferson's many stumbles as he struggled to respond to the invasion, and along the way, the author paints an intimate portrait of Jefferson, illuminating his quiet conversations, his family turmoil, and his private hours at Monticello. Jefferson's record was both remarkable and unsatisfactory, filled with contradictions, writes Kranish. As a revolutionary leader who felt he was unqualified to conduct a war, Jefferson never resolved those contradictions--but, as Kranish shows, he did learn lessons during those dark hours that served him all his life.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. America, in so many ways, has forgotten. Its roots, its purpose, its identity all have become shrouded behind a veil of political correctness bent on twisting the nation s founding, and its founders, to fit within a misshapen modern mold. The time has come to remember again. In The Jefferson Lies, prominent historian David Barton sets out to correct the distorted image of a once-beloved founding father, Thomas Jefferson. To do so, Barton tackles seven myths head-on, including: Did Thomas Jefferson really have a child by his young slave girl, Sally Hemings?Did he write his own Bible, excluding the parts of Christianity with which he disagreed? Was he a racist who opposed civil rights and equality for black Americans? Did he, in his pursuit of separation of church and state, advocate the secularizing of public life? Through Jefferson s own words and the eyewitness testimony of contemporaries, Barton repaints a portrait of the man from Monticello as a visionary, an innovator, a man who revered Jesus, a classical Renaissance man and a man whose pioneering stand for liberty and God-given inalienable rights fostered a better world for this nation and its posterity. For America, the time to remember these truths again is now. …
