Stephen Vincent Benét (July 22, 1898 March 13, 1943) was an American poet, short story writer, and novelist. He is best known for his book-length narrative poem, John Brown's Body (1928), for which he received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Its title references the rad ical abolitionist John Brown, who raided the federal armory at Harpers Ferry in Virginia in October 1859. He was captured and hanged later that year.
