Kane's expedition was the second backed by Henry Grinnell, a New York me…rchant, to search for Franklin. Kane hoped to find him -and probably the long-sought dreamed-of open polar sea route to the North Pole and to China. Kane failed in his purposes, but produced a memorable, gritty, survival account. Der US-amerikanische Polarforscher Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857) war Leiter der "United States Franklin Search Expedition" von 1853 bis 1855 (der von Henry Grinnell finanzierten sog. "Zweiten Grinnell-Expedition", die Aufschluss über das Schicksal des verschollenen Polarforschers John Franklin bringen sollte. Kane hatte als Arzt bereits an der ersten Grinnell-Expedition teilgenommen. Auf der zweiten Expedition stieß Kanes Suchmannschaft weit in den Smith-Sund vor und gelangte über den 81. Breitengrad hinaus. Das Schiff [Brigg "Advance"] blieb jedoch im Eis stecken, die Mannschaft schlug sich nach zweimaliger Überwinterung in Booten nach der grönländischen Siedlung Upernavik durch. Auf dieser Expedition [Teilnehmer u.a. Israel Hayes] gelangen einige wichtige Entdeckungen im arktischen Nordamerika (vgl. Eutiner Landesbibliothek, Katalog Reiseliteratur).
