Paperback. Etat : Good. Welcome to Kenya, land of light and infinite variety. National Geographic will be your guide in Nairobi--and into the bush beyond. Kenya''s busy capital bustles with crowds, traffic, and markets selling produce from the heartlands. Out in the bush, myriad tribal peoples, including the Maasai, live more traditional lives. Your African odyssey will take you to the soaring Mount Kilimanjaro. A climb to its snow-capped peak will lead you through five different ecosystems. Such diversity is common to Kenya''s landscapes and is also reflected in the country''s stunning array of wildlife. Lions, zebras, and wildebeest roam the land, while the great rivers teem with hippopotami and crocodiles. The human history of Kenya is no less diverse. From the first footprints of humans to the colonial rule of the British and the Germans, major change was a constant in the progress toward independence in the 1950s and prosperity in the 1960s. The book concludes with a look at the challenges facing modern-day Kenya. …

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Since Kenya was a developing nation, I expected it to be 'behind' in many things. But there were numerous ways I found Africans to be more advanced than Americans. The gracious way they treated others and the way clocks did not rule over people, are a couple of examples. Tasks were set aside; watches (when worn at all) were ignored for the chance to talk with a visitor. Tea or whatever food was available was brought out and shared in order to make you feel accepted and welcome (even if it meant the host would later have to go hungry). Among the members of our team, I felt the least prepared for the journey upon which we were about to embark. But I was soon to learn many lessons that I never would have learned any other way; lessons I still hold dear to my heart today Even though some of our time in Kenya was very challenging, it was so life altering for me that I would not trade it for anything. It was there that my faith in God truly became my own. I hope to share with you some of the experiences and lessons I learned. Believe me there is nothing particularly complex or miraculous in them; just a young woman trying her best to fit into a culture that was not her own. If you will, put yourself in the stories. Think about how you would react in the same situation. Hopefully, you'll take away a better understanding of yourself and God's sovereignty like I was able to do. I'm doing my part by telling the stories. I hope you will do your part by listening and then remembering. …

Paperback. Etat : Good. Tony Hillerman endorses this richly evocative new series that portrays the day-to-day lives of Native Americans in the west during a volatile time of betrayals great and small. The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 called for a reallocation of tribal lands in the Plains. Anticipating that the U.S. Government would make good on its promise of hefty sums to make up for their loss of property, a number of tribes stood on the threshold of history.- Englade is an Edgar Award-nominated author. …

Swift's fans.have linked Idina to The Bolter, a song on the record-breaking album, The Tortured Poets Department"--Tatler Idina Sackville's relentless affairs, wild sex parties, and brazen flaunting of convention shocked high society and inspired countless writers and artists, from Nancy Mitford to Greta Garbo. But Idina's compelling charm masked the pain of betrayal and heartbreak.   Now Frances Osborne explores the life of Idina, her enigmatic great-grandmother, using letters, diaries, and family legend, following her from Edwardian London to the hills of Kenya, where she reigned over the scandalous antics of the "Happy Valley Set." Dazzlingly chic yet warmly intimate, The Bolter is a fascinating look at a woman whose energy still burns bright almost a century later. Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize and founder of the Green Belt Movement, grew up in the highlands of Kenya, where fig trees cloaked the hills, fish filled the streams, and the people tended their bountiful gardens. But over many years, as more and more land was cleared, Kenya was transformed. When Wangari returned home from college in America, she found the village gardens dry, the people malnourished, and the trees gone. How could she alone bring back the trees and restore the gardens and the people? Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature, says: "Wangari Maathai's epic story has never been told better--everyone who reads this book will want to plant a tree!" With glowing watercolor illustrations and lyrical prose, Claire Nivola tells the remarkable story of one woman's effort to change the fate of her land by teaching many to care for it. An author's note provides further information about Wangari Maathai and the Green Belt Movement. In keeping with the theme of the story, the book is printed on recycled paper. Nivola, Claire A. (illustrateur).…
