Since the 1950s Professor Jaakko Hintikka has been one of the leading figures of analytical philosophy. He has developed and applied new logical and conceptual tools (such as distributive normal forms, possible worlds semantic…s, epistemic logic, inductive logic, semantic information, logic of questions, game-theoretical semantics) to the study of logical inference, the semantics of natural language, knowledge, propositional attitudes, philosophy of science, and the history of philosophy from Plato and Aristotle to Kant, Husserl, and Wittgenstein. The articles of this volume are contributions to the international symposium Language, Knowledge, and Intentionality, held at the University of Helsinki, May 25-27, 1989, to celebrate Hintikka's 60th birthday. The articles represent on-going research in three areas: Early Contemporary Philosophy, Language and Meaning, Cognition and Its Philosophy. Each of these sections is opened with an article by Jaakko Hintikka.
