PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, "Proof Copy" 8vo, red cloth with gold lettering on spine, Mylar-protected dust jacket (unclipped) with red lettering and rectangular rule surround on front cover, binder's slip stating "Owing to production delays / this book was not published / until 1948," xi + 194 pages. PRESENTATION COPY by Author of a SCARCE early collection of Farrell's essays probably delayed due to postwar paper shortages. James T. Farrell (1904-1979) was a prolific American novelist, short story writer, and poet best known for his blue-collar, Irish-Catholic Depression-era stories set in Chicago. Farrell's best known works are a trilogy about the tough, gritty, initially promising though progressively tragic life (often autobiographical) of impoverished young, Irish-Catholic Studs Lonigan: Young Lonigan (1931), The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan (1934), and Judgment Day (1935). The series was made into a film in 1960 and tv series in 1979. SCARCE. Internally clean and tight. A few chips to the head of the dj at top of spine, otherwise a remarkably well preserved and clean dust jacket.

Ajouter au panierNo Binding. Etat : VERY GOOD CONDITION. Etat de la jaquette : NO DUST JACKET AS ISSUED. GALLEY PROOFS. (65) PAGES. THIS IS AN VERY UNCOMMON LONG GALLEY PROOF OF JAMES T. FARRELL'S 1945 BOOK PUBLICATION OF "THE LEAGUE OF FRIGHTENED PHILISTINES AND OTHER STORIES." THE GALLEY PROOF HAS MODERATE CHIPPING AND CLOSED TEARS OF THE FINAL PAGE'S EDGE WHERE THEY WERE LESS PROTECTED IN THEIR FOLDED STATE OVER THE YEARS. THE SMALL TEARS ARE BACKED BY OLD SCOTCH TAPE "REPAIRS." THE GALLEY PROOF'S UNNUMBERED PAGES HAVE A HORIZONTAL FOLD IN THEIR MIDDLE. THE PAPER IS MILDLY TONED WITH AGE, THE 65 SHEETS ARE UNPAGED. ALL OF THE PRINTED MATERIAL IS ON THE RECTO PAGES. THERE IS INK WRITING ON THE HEADING OF THE FIRST PAGE AS FOLLOWS, "THE LEAGUE OF FRIGHTENED PHILISTINES AND OTHER PAPERS. BY JAMES T. FARRELL (VANGUARD - $2.75)." IN ADDITION, THERE ARE TYPED STATEMENTS " PLEASE RETURN TO BERNARD B. PERRY 426 MADISON AVE. NEW YORK, NY." AND "PUB. DATE MAY 24, 1945." THERE ARE 19 ESSAYS ON WRITING AND LITERATURE THAT DEFINE FARRELL'S EARLY PHILOSOPHY ON WRITING THAT PROPELLED HIS EARLY CAREER. THERE IS ONLY ONE ESSAY TITLED " MORE ON HOLLYWOOD' THAT AMPLIFIES ANOTHER ESSAY IN THE GALLEY PROOF AND THE FINAL BOOK THAT IS TITLED "THE LANGUAGE OF HOLLYWOOD." ALSO THE "LETTER TO A YOUNG WRITER" IN THE BOOK EXPRESSES HIS ADVICE TO THOSE CONTEMPLATING WRITING AS A FUTURE CAREER THAT IS NOT IN THE GALLEY PROOF. AT LEAST 5 OR 6 OF THE ESSAY'S TITLES HAVE BEEN MODIFIED, THE TEXT OF THE ESSAYS IN THE BOOK ARE MAINTAINED FROM THAT IN THE GALLEY PROOF. THERE ARE A FEW ADDITIONS AND EXPLANATIONS OF THE TEXT THAT WERE ADDED TO THE FINAL BOOK PUBLICATION FROM THAT OF THE GALLEY PROOF, BUT THERE ARE NOT ANY GREAT MODIFICATIONS OF THE ESSAYS FROM THAT OF THEIR ORIGINAL PUBLICATIONS IN MAGAZINES AND AT WRITING CONGRESSES. A PREFACE WAS BEEN ADDED TO THE FINAL PRODUCTION OF THE BOOK BY FARRELL. THE BOOK PROVIDES AN UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND FARRELL'S PHILOSOPHY ON WRITING AND LITERATURE THAT WAS DERIVED FROM HIS EXTENSIVE EARLY READING OF THE BIOGRAPHYS AND WRITINGS OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY, MARK TWAIN, RING LARDNER, FYODOR DOSTOIEVSKY, JAMES JOYCE, ANTON CHEKHOV. LEWIS MUMFORD AND MORTIMER J. ADLER. THE GALLEY PROOF DEMONSTRATES THE EVOLUTION OF HIS THOUGHTS TO THE FINAL PRODUCT OF THE BOOK. GALLEY PROOFS WERE PRODUCED IN A LIMITED NUMBER, i, e. 50 COPIES OR SO AND WERE OFTEN COLLECTED AND DESTROYED BY THE PUBLISHER. THAT EXPLAINS THEIR RARITY.
