This binding is one of the most ornate that was issued. It is a lush light tan imitation leather, with gilt and red decorative embellishment. The book has a bright gilt top edge, and includes a place ribbon which is sewn in. ************************************* The spine says "The Works of Boswell", but the title page informs us that the book is an abridgment of "The Life of Samuel Johnson". The abridgment was effected by Bergen Evans. The original work is a multi-volume affair, long and involved. Ms. Thrale-Piozzi is an important source on Dr. Johnson; she published Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson in 1786 and also their letters to each other in 1788. These sources, like the marginal notes found within these volumes, help to fill out the somewhat biased picture of Johnson as presented by James Boswell.
