Cracking to front outer hinge, which is slightly tender but holding. Marbled endpapers, front endpaper only just starting at gutter. Armorial bookplate of J.C.F. Jacobi to inside front board. Title page printed in red & black. Limited edition: one of 9 hors commerce copies of the fine quarto format of the first edition, printed on watermarked laid paper. The first edition consisted of 209 copies, of which 109 were in the quarto 'tellière' format on Lafuma-Navarre paper with the 'LBN Voiron' Nouvelle Revue Française watermark. Of these 109 copies, 9 were hors commerce, marked A to I. This volume is one of these copies, marked 'I'. Mazelin's most famous novel, this won the Prix Goncourt in 1932 (acknowledged by 'Goncourt 1932' in gilt to spine).
