Medico personale di Carlo IX e di Enrico III di Francia, cui il presente volume è dedicato, docente al Collège de France, Louis Duret (Bâgé-la-Ville, 1527- 1586) fu celebre fisico e medico del suo tempo. La profonda conoscenza delle lingue classiche lo portò ad approfondire le teorie di Ippocrate (Coo, 460 circa - 377 a.c.), considerato il padre della medicina, che era uso, sembra, citare a memoria, tanto da essere soprannominato l'Ippocrate di Francia. Nel presente testo egli segue i percorsi del celebre medico, analizzando dettagliatamente le fonti greche, e concentrandosi principalmente sulle sue teorie delle diagnosi. > "Catalogue des sciences medicales de la Bibliothèque Impériale", I, 574, segnala l'edizione 1737.
