Edition original du texte d'Ozanam sur le compas de proportion illustré pour la première fois par un instrument de la fabrication de Jean Chapotot. Le compas de Chapotot est gravé de seulement cinq lignes de calcul : cordes, solides, parties égales, plans et poligones alors que les éditions précédentes du texte d'Henrion sur le compas de proportion illustré d'un instrument de Chorez (édition de 1618) ou d'un instrument de Nicolas Bion (édition de 1681) comptait respectivement 4 et 6 lignes. Si le texte d'Henrion est le texte français de référence sur la construction et l'utilisation du compas de proportion de 1618 à 1685 ; celui d'Ozanam sera le texte de référence jusqu'à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Ozanam commença par donner des cours à Lyon, puis il monta à Paris où il y donnait des leçons de mathématiques. Il publia de nombreux ouvrages qui le rendirent célèbre, comme ses Récréations mathématiques, et ses ouvrages de mathématiques appliquées. Il fut élu à l'Académie Royale des Sciences en 1701. Notre exemplaire compte 4 planches, contre 2 dans la plupart des exemplaires. Les deux planches supplémentaires, ici reliées in fine entre les pages 134 et 135, illustrent un compas de proportion plus archaïque semblable à celui de Chorez figurant dans l'édition de 1618 d'Henrion. Restauration en bas de la page de titre, sans manque de texte, planches du compas de Chapotot rognées un peu courtes et auréoles d'humidité dans la marge supérieure des premiers feuillets, sinon correct exemplaire.
