Jean-Sylvain Bailly "Astronom, Bürgermeister, Revolutionsopfer" (Deutschlandfunk, 15.09.21) so lässt sich in drei Worten beschreiben, was den Pariser Bailly ausmachte. Erst der Kunst zugeneigt, wie es die Familientradition so wollte, dann jedoch durch den Astronom Nicolas de Lacaille (1713-1762) angeregt, sich mit Naturwissenschaften und genauer den Studien der Astronomie zu widmen. Er berechnete Hunderte Sternenpositionen, korrigierte Lacailles Berechnungen zu den Tierkreiszeichen und errechnete den exakten Lauf des wiederkehrenden Kometen Halley. Bailly wurde in alle französische Akademien aufgenommen, was kaum einem Wissenschaftler vor ihm gelang.Nach dem Sturm auf die Bastille am 14.Juli 1789, zu Beginn der Französischen Revolution wurde Bailly, der sich als Astronom international und als Staatsmann im Rahmen des Dritten Standes einen Namen gemacht hatte, zum Bürgermeister von Paris gewählt. Sein Engagement für die Verbesserung Pariser Krankenhäuser und gegen eine drohende Hungersnot einerseits und politischen Fehleinschätzungen und -entscheidungen andererseits (welche am 17. Juli 1791 zu einem Blutbad unter demonstrierenden Handwerkern und Arbeiter führte) ließen ihn in der Bevölkerung und unter den Revolutionären so verhasst werden, das er sein Amt als Bürgermeister niederlegte und Paris verließ. In Nantes, wo er sich niederließ, verfasste er seine Memoiren Memoires d'un témoin" (die allerdings erst posthum erschienen). 1793 kehrte er in die Nähe von Paris zurück, um einen Freund und Akademiekollegen zu besuchen.
