A friend of Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, and D'Alembert, and active contributor to the Encyclopédie Méthodique, the Abbé Morellet translated into French Beccaria's treatise on crimes and punishments in 1766, and wrote many other works including several on political economy and an account of eighteenth century literature and philosophy. He was dubbed by Voltaire Abbé Mords-les because of his biting wit. In 1785 he was admitted into the Académie française, the archives of which he concealed at the risk of his life during the reign of terror. Einaudi 4022. Goldsmiths' 23426.
