First edition, preceding any English-language printing, of Franklin's autobiography. This is certainly Franklin's best known book, and a classic Americanum in which he tells the story of his climb, through thrift and frugality, from poverty to success and influence. It is also one of the best pictures of life in Philadelphia during his youth and middle age. Franklin is remarkably candid throughout the work about people with whom he was involved and his own motives for his actions. The first British edition appeared in 1793, followed by the first American printing in 1794. The translation is attributed by Quérard to Gribelin, and includes the first two parts of the Autobiography (up to the year 1731) which Franklin wrote at Twyford in 1771. In fact, both the first English and the first American editions were re-translated from this French version, and for many years subsequent popular versions in English were in fact based on the re-translation by Benjamin Vaughan. Not until 1818 did William Temple Franklin publish the first edition as written by Franklin (also containing the first appearance of the third part).
