Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Poor. No Jacket. Reference Copy. A Poor 8vo Blue Ribbon Books hardcover (1929 copyright by Harcourt, Brace and Company). Missing its dust jacket. Modest condition grade because of patches of black staining--probably book mold--on the pages' bottom edge that bleeds into the bottom margin of some pages. The moisture exposure has also caused gentle riffling and an occasionally light stain line in the lower third of the contents, plus a disturbance in the sheen in the lower half of the boards. The rear paste-down has a small bookseller label and small paper tears in the hinge/gutter. In other respects, a G hardcover with contents (x + 336 pp., + a frontispiece and 19 additional drawings) that appear mark-free, complete, and securely bound. Black cloth with spine gilt lettering and a blind stamped decoration on the upper board. Bumped and/or well-rubbed bottom corner tips; bumped spine head and tail edges. No ex-library markings. **Extra charges to cover shipping costs may apply to an order requesting expedited and/or international shipping because of the size and weight of this book.

Ajouter au panierThe photos in the listing are of the actual book you will receive. "The Magic Island is an illustrated account of William Buehler Seabrook's travels in Haiti and is considered the first popular English language text to confront the idea of zombies; soon after it was published, zombie movies came to dominate American cinema. A journalist and adventurer, branded a "great traveler and terrible human," Seabrook pursued full immersion of himself into the local and the bizarre. This saga details his experiences with a voodoo priestess who initiated him into the religion's pageantries; incidents that include drinking blood, soul transference, and resurrection. The Vodou religion emerged after slaves arrived in Haiti and integrated their old African customs with the severe realities of slavery, and in so doing created the idea of the zonbi, a word that can be traced back to the Kongo word for soul. After its release in 1929, The Magic Island became a best seller, but after his death, Seabrook has remained mostly out-of-print and his social contributions have been unappreciated. The book includes twenty moving line drawings by Alexander King, an Austrian-born author, ad artist, painter, and television personality. Fair condition with previous owner name to front free end paper, front hinge cracked with a small tear to the inside hinge edge of the half title page, binding thread loose at first signature, detached at bottom only, light soiling to few pages. Light soiling to covers. See photos CLPHe.

Ajouter au panierIn-8 (22 x 15 cm), 319-(1) pp., percaline éditeur illustrée. Publisher's cloth. Bon exemplaire.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. An excellent copy of the 1931 edition. Explorer, Occultist and erstwhile friend of Aleister Crowley, William Seabrook's famous book on Haiti covers Voodoo, cannibalism, animal sacrifice, magic and related practice. It is regarded as the first English language work seriously to describe the Zombie, and has been seen as a significant influence on the well known 1930s film The White Zombie. Undoubtedly a clear influence on the West's view of Haiti and its culture in the twentieth century, not the least on writers such as Greene and Fleming. First edition was in 1929, and its success meant an instant reprint the same year, and then another one in 1931 which is when this edition dates from. This is in excellent condition. Uncut pages are really nice: some foxing on earliest pages but overwhelmingly totally bright and clean. Some foxing to text fore edges. A small neat inscription on front FEP, dated 1932. Excellent illustrations by Alexander King are all present. As are the many photographs. Binding is totally tight. Cover and spine are lovely: clean and with only very minor corner crumpling. Striking images are clear. A really good copy. See photos, all of which are of the copy for sale, we don't use stock photos. More photos on request, thanks!

Credited with being the story that introduced the "zombie" concept to the United States. William Seabrooks account of the Black Magic Voodoo rights practiced in Haiti at the turn of the last century. The author, William Seabrook was a drinking companion of Aleister Crowely and had a lifelong interest in the unusual and the occult. Seabrook was so passionate about his researches into strange practices that he ate a substantial amount of human flesh when studying cannibalism. Seabrook offers here first hand accounts of Voodoo rituals and Black Magic Sorcery practices by the Voodoo elite. A fascinating early account of authentic Voodoo Black Magic Rituals and Practices.
