Alf Landon -- of this 1936 image-enhancing biography of Landon, that year's Republican Presidential nominee. This portrait of the likable Kansas governor was published in advanced of the 1936 political conventions, the Republican version of which would select a rival to incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Gov. Landon politicked deftly amongst his fellow Republicans, winning the nomination on the first ballot at the convention. In the general election, he deployed an out-of-sight, out-of-mind strategy, while his fireside-chatting opponent dominated the limelight with his ongoing battle with the Great Depression. Alf won maple tree country in a landslide, carrying Vermont and Maine. However, Alf lost the other 46 states and suffered a historic popular vote thrashing, an epic enough Harlem Globetrotters vs. the Washington Generals result that it kept him as a ready punchline for political comedians for decades after. Inscribed by Alf Landon to a previous owner on the front endpaper. The inscription is dated by Landon, April 2, 1936. Cloth, 245 pages. No dust jacket. The book has a light crease on the spine and there's tanning on two interior pages that had housed a newspaper clipping. Signed by Author(s).
