Égyptologue de renom (passé d'abord par les fouilles des grands sites Perses où il mit notamment au jour le célèbre stèle du Code d'Hammurabi conservée au Louvres), Gustave Jéquier (1868-1946) occupa durant 26 ans la chaire d'égyptologie de l'université de Nauchâtel. Il apporta une contribution majeure à l'étude des textes des pyramides, ces hiéroglyphes retrouvés dans les tombeaux égyptiens qui nous permettent de connaitre les conceptions funéraires de l'ancienne Égypte. Publié en 1924, ce Manuel d'archéologie égyptienne fut conçu comme une introduction à l'étude de l'architecture des Égyptiens. Jéquier y dresse une classification méthodique des éléments constitutifs de cette architecture, démontrant son irréductible originalité. Plus de 250 documents iconographiques viennent illustrer le texte, dont de nombreuses photographies en noir et blanc des sites égyptiens. Le résultat est un magnifique ouvrage d'égyptologie qui ravira tous les passionnés de cette illustre civilisation.
