Comme souvent sur les ensembles homogènes non réassemblés ils sont absents. Joseph-Marie Amiot, né le 8 février 1718 à Toulon (France) et décédé le 8 octobre 1793 à Pékin (Chine), est un prêtre jésuite, astronome et historien français, missionnaire en Chine. Il fut l'un des derniers survivants de la Mission jésuite en Chine. Il supervisa les textes de cet ouvrage et consacra un tome entier à la musique important témoignage sur la pratique musicale en chine au XVIIIe. Cette ouvrage se donne pour objectif de mieux faire connaitre la culture chinoise en Europe , il fait le tour des grandes connaissance tant d'écriture que d'organisation militaire, de philosophie avec un livre sur Confucius ou encore comme dit précédemment de musique.

Memoires concernat les Chinois was an important source for introducing China to Europeans and the foundation of French Sinology. It collected the reports of French and Chinese missionaries in Beijing, "considered at the time the chief source of information in Europe regarding China and its people . Among the monographs, the most interesting are on language and literature, warfare and philosophy, including a complete life of Confucius. In addition, there are studies on natural history, science, architecture and agriculture, translations of Chinese poetry and biographical sketches of famous Chinese. This is undoubtedly the best work that the Jesuits have published on China" - Western Travellers in China. Jean Joseph Marie Amiot, the principle author, was in China from 1740 on, and was a confidante of the Emperor Quianlong. Significantly, the work helped introduce the philosophy of Confucius to the west (volume 12 is the most complete work on the life of Confucius published up to that point in Europe) and also contained 18 pictures of Confucius. Amiot drew the pictures of Confucius based on Ming-era icons, modified to reflect contemporary western Christian religious iconography. (See Chao Ying.) The work includes sections on many aspects of Chinese life including music, warfare, etc. Volume 7 is a reprint of Amiot's Art militaire des Chinois (published in 1772), the first translation into a European language of the Sun Tzu's Art of War. First edition of this monumental survey of Chinese life in the 18th century as witnessed by the Jesuit missionaries. This work by missionaries including Cibot, Bourgeois, Poirot, Ko and Yang comprises translations of classic Chinese works of law, maxims and proverbs, as well as essays on Chinese linguistics, current affairs and scientific observation. Volume VII is a reprint of Amiot's "Art militaire des Chinois" (Paris 1772), the first translation into a European language of the ancient Chinese military strategy, while volume XII, the "Vie de Confucius", was more complete and accurate than any previous text on the subject. - Amiot, the main contributor, went to China in 1740 and soon won the confidence of the Qianlong Emperor, remaining for the rest of his life in Beijing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. Fluent in both Chinese and Tartar, his works were amongst the first to bring the philosophy and life of the East to the western world, and his "Dictionnaire tatare-mantchou-français" (Paris 1789) was the first to introduce these languages to Europe. Many of the engravings are based on Chinese designs sent by Amiot to Henri Bertin, minister in charge of Chinese affairs under Louis XVI. - Volumes 16 and 17 were published much later in 1814 and under a different imprint, and complete sets are infrequently found on the market. - Some wear to spine ends and at edges.
