Couverture rigide. Etat : Bon. Edition originale. - - - - Paris: The French Library of Ladvocat, 1822., 1822. 2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., xix, 472, [8]; 2 p.l., 516. with half-titles. A fine uncut set in original printed wrs. (scattered hint of foxing). Second Enlarged Edition. A friend of Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, and D'Alembert, and active contributor to the Encyclopédie Méthodique, the Abbé Morellet translated into French Beccaria's treatise on crimes and punishments in 1766, and wrote many other works including several on political economy and an account of eighteenth century literature and philosophy. He was dubbed by Voltaire Abbé Mords-les because of his biting wit. In 1785 he was admitted into the Académie française, the archives of which he concealed at the risk of his life during the reign of terror. Einaudi 4022. Goldsmiths' 23426. First edition of the memoirs of the French economist and philosopher André Morellet, a leading Enlightenment thinker, written mainly between 1797 and 1805 and published posthumously. "Morellet clearly intends to communicate to later generations the message that the philosophes, who had sought to bring about gradual reforms, should not be accused of causing the excesses of the Terror. The first sixteen of Morellet's highly readable 33 chapters record his life story up to the summer of 1788. the next nine chapters are a personal documentary of the Revolution and the Terror, which swept away Morellet's hopes of reform, many of his friends, and the major part of his income. the last eight chapters concern Morellet's life after the fall of Robespierre" (Medlin, pp. 121-6). Goldsmiths' 23119. Dorothy Medlin, "The Composition and Publication History of André Morellet's 'Mémoires sur le dix-huitième siècle et sur la Révolution'", Diderot Studies, Vol. 28, 2000. 2 vols, octavo (204 x 121 mm), pp. [4], viii, xxxii, 384; [4], iv, 444. Portrait frontispiece; additional 4-page advertisement for the works of Schiller bound at front. Contemporary tree sheep, twin red and green morocco labels, smooth spines gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers and edges. Neatly restored at extremities, rubbing to front joint of vol. II, light foxing. A very good copy.
