Ajouter au panierFirst edition in the rare original cloth of Dickens' popular retelling of the memoirs of celebrated English clown Joseph Grimaldi. Octavo, two volumes, original pink cloth with floral design stamped in blind, gilt titles and detailing of a clown to the spine, frontispiece portrait of Grimaldi, with 11 illustrations by George Cruikshank. Mixed state with the first issue of the last plate in the book, "The Last Song", which has no border; however, the numerical error in the inserted list of "Embellishments" (128 for 182) has been corrected. In very good condition, bookplate of Gustavia A. Senff to the front pastedown. Housed in two custom folding chemise and a half morocco slipcase. After the legendary pantomime's death, Dickens was invited by Richard Bentley to edit and improve Thomas Egerton Wilks's clumsily written Life of Grimaldi, which had been based on the clown's own notes, which Dickens did under his regular nom de plume, "Boz". As a child, Dickens saw Grimaldi perform at the Star Theatre, Rochester, in 1820. The Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi, illustrated by George Cruikshank, sold well, to Dickens's surprise.

Ajouter au panierTaschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This is a 6 X 9 facsimile of the 1853 Routledge edition of 'Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi' edited by Charles 'Boz' Dickens. It is the story of Late Georgian / Early Victorian Clown / artiste, Joseph Grimaldi. The book is a window into the delights and tragedies of late Georgian life, centering on the theatre and through the eyes of the said clown. If you thought anyone below the local squire just grovelled in the mud for the odd shekel, think again, in this instance anyway. Grimaldi earned amounts then, which your local band in the pub or club would be happy to earn now. Most of all though, take in the dignity of a man whose trusting nature saw him victim to many a rogue, most with a lawyers signature behind them. It is also worth noting that as Dickens was the final editor, the man's life story is presented in true Dickensian fashion; it could almost be Pickwick's Papers, it is that good.
