In this monograph, Dr. Osley examines the origins of the italic hand in the Netherlands as well as Mercator's own practice. He demonstrates the revolutionary influence Mercator exercised in the Low Countries not only on the lettering of maps and globes but also on book publishing, scientific instruments, and art prints. Includes a facsimile of Mercator's treatise on lettering Literarum Latinarum. accompanied by an English translation. This is followed by a translation of Walter Ghim's contemporary biography of Mercator. Preface by R. A. Skelton.
