Endpapers repaired, discoloured, with some pencil notes and a previous owner's stamp; a little toning, gutters grubby around title page, which has small corner crease, else just the occasional spot or sign of fingering. James Beattie, (1735 - 1803) was a Scottish poet, moralist, & philosopher. 'The Minstrel; or, The Progress of Genius' was originally published in two volumes, in 1771 and 1774. This later edition from 1814, complete in one volume, contains some of his other poetry and notes on the Minstrel.

This is one of many numerous illustrated editions of Beattie's The Minstrel, and John Thurston (1774 - 1822) enjoyed an enviable reputation as a draughtsman who provided images for a number of books; the engraver, Luke Clennell was also a fine draughtsman, who learned his trade as draughtsman and engraved while apprenticed to Thomas Bewick (17531828), to whom he was indentured for seven years on his sixteenth birthday, 8 April 1797.

Early owner's signature of Sarah Stuart West on the front fly-lead. (Isaac, 'Checklist' in Davison's new specimen 17) An early piece of printing by Davison after the end of his partnership with Catnach, and the first edition of this title to appear solely with Davison's imprint. Discussing the cuts in this edition which Davison & Catnach used in the 1807 edition, Thomas Hugo (Bewick collector 223) writes 'in some of [the cuts] it is asserted, and can be hardly denied, that Thomas Bewick had a hand.' Tattersfield (Thomas Bewick, the complete illustrative work) while not including this work makes several references to the vignettes also appearing in Davison's editions of Burns, and Ferguson.

The gilt-decorated spine, with contrasting title panel. has a shallow, inoffensive crease. Hinges strained but secure. Binding in overall good condition. Text in very good, tight, clean condition, with only a little very light age-browning. Old owner's signature on front free end paper.

There were several variants of this Alnwick edition, printed by William Davison (1780-1858), with differing numbers of illustrations. This version of 1810 includes six fine full page wood engravings and 9 tailpiece vignettes, drawn by the printmaker and illustrator, John Thurston (1774-1822) and engraved by Luke Clennell (1781-1840), who served an apprenticeship with Thomas Bewick.
