Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good++ condition. First Edition. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901. Bright, clean, tight copy. No owner's name or bookplate. Handsomely bound in the original dark green cloth, with lovely and elaborate gilt-stamped ornamentation on the front cover and spine. Gilt is still bright and shiny. Finely printed by D. B. Updike at the Merrymount Press. Illustrated with a tissue-guarded portrait of Nell Gwyn after a painting by Sir Peter Lely. In his foreword, Hazelton thanks the actress Miss Henrietta Crosman, for her "courage and exquisite art" in introducing his play to the public. Smith 84 [in NOTES ON THE MERRYMOUNT PRESS & ITS WORK]. This is the novelization of the author's play about Nell Gwyn (1650-1687), the British girl who parleyed her job selling oranges at the King's Theatre into a career as an actress by age 15. Samuel Pepys was among those who admired her work on stage. Pretty, witty Nell became mistress to actor Charles Hart, whom she later called "Charles the First." Nell then passed to Charles Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, her "Charles the Second." By the age of 19, she had become a mistress to King Charles II, whom she dubbed "Charles the Third." Once when her coach was surrounded by an angry crowd who mistook her for the Duchess of Portland, the Catholic Louise de Keroualle, Nell stuck her head out the window and explained: "Pray good people be civil, I am the PROTESTANT whore." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good++ condition. 8vo. ix, 313pp.
