This book delves into the meticulous art of dry-fly fishing, offering a comprehensive guide to crafting and utilizing artificial flies that mirror the appearance and behaviour of natural insects. The author, a seasoned angler and keen entomologist, emphasizes the importance of precise imitation in achieving success on the water. Emerging during a transformative era in fly fishing, when traditional patterns were being challenged by innovative approaches, the book advocates for a more scientific and observant method. Rather than relying on generic or fanciful designs, the author meticulously analyzes and categorizes the insects found on chalk streams, creating a series of patterns that faithfully replicate their colours, sizes, and forms. Central to this philosophy is the belief that trout and grayling possess a discerning eye for colour and detail. This book guides readers through the process of selecting appropriate materials, understanding the significance of various life stages of insects, and arranging a well-rounded collection of flies. By embracing the principles of precise imitation and entomological accuracy, anglers can elevate their dry-fly fishing to an art form, enhancing their connection with the natural world and increasing their chances of success on the water. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Ppxxiv,219 + 1pp ads. 9 colour plates of Farlow's & Hardy's flies, colour & b/w plates, illustrations. Fully bound in brown bonded leather, gilt FFCL motif to upper board, spine titled in gilt, top edge gilt, silk marker ribbon. Brown buckram slipcase. Fine in slipcase. An un-numbered publisher's copy from an edition of 150 copies. "This is the Dry Fly Entomology, 1897, completely rewritten and very greatly improved; the first serious attempt to represent the natural insects found on the water" (Callahan & Morgan). Contrary to what Halford says in Floating Flies and How to Dress Them (1886) and Dry Fly Entomology (1897) where 90 and 100 flies are described, in Modern Development he now feels that the 33 "are, to my mind, quite sufficient patterns for any dry-fly man on a south country or other chalk stream." During 1902 Halford collected a very large number of specimens of flies on which the rising trout were feeding and preserved them in formalin which he had read about in an article in the Field in 1901. He then worked out the new patterns with the local fly-dresser reproducing as nearly as possible the precise shades of colour of the natural insect. He fished with these flies only from 1903 to 1909 with great success. Part I - The Halford Dry Fly Patterns - contains everything concerned with tying these patterns, matching the colours, sizes, proportions, tools and materials required etc. Part II -The Halford Dry Fly Patterns in Use - is just that but, of course, with Halford's inimitable attention to detail and analysis. "This edition of 150 copies plus 10 unnumbered publisher's copies." With a new fourteen-page introduction by Tony Hayter. .
