Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. W. W. Skeat (Rev.). A Moeso-Gothic Glossary With an Introduction, an Outline of Moeso-Gothic Grammar, and a List of Anglo-Saxon and Old and Modern English Words Etymologically Connected With Moeso-Gothic. London/Berlin: Asher & Co., 1868, 1st. edition, 1st. printing, xxii, 340 pp. *** If you just read the title, you have finished half the book! Moeso-gothic is an extinct Gothic language that was widely spoken in Eastern Europe by the barbarians encountered by the Roman Legions. The oldest written document in this language dates from the 4th. century A.D. The language died out during the early Middle Ages. Moseo-Gothic has the largest number of extant written works of any East German language, which means one must learn the language in order to study what they wrote ( makes sense). Skeat claims that this Glossary is the most useful to students of this erudite topic. *** Bound in brick red cloth boards and spine with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. The covers have light soil with a few small spots on the back board, some minor blemishes here and there, moderate wear at corners and spine ends. One small bump on the fore edge of both covers. G+ condition. *** 9.25 inches tall by 7.5 inches.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition, small 4to, pp. xxii, 282 columns, [3], [287]-307, [3] pp. [311]-340 columns, [1] errata; original terracotta cloth lettered in gilt on upper cover and spine; snag at the top of the front free endpaper, else very good and sound. With the green 19th-century bookseller's ticket of John Penington & Son, Philadelphia on the front pastedown. This copy with a number of 19th-century erudite notes in pencil in the margins. Given the nature of the subject and the publishers it was likely issued in a small edition, many of which, 98 at least, are located in various libraries around the world. The number of Americans (assuming this book was not repatriated) with a knowledge of Meoso-Gothic in the 19th-century was obviously miniscule, and the notes in this copy may prove to be more valuable than first imagined.
