Ajouter au panierThe post-larval shell and hinge development of the bivalves Abra alba (Wood), Tellina fabula Gmelin and Donax vittatus (da Costa) from the recently metamorphosed size to a juvenile size of 1 21 4 mm shell length has been examined using scanning electron microscopy. Early post-larval development in the stages up to 1 01 2 mm size can involve considerable morphogenetic change and requires careful description with photographic developmental series. The form of the pediveliger larva is present in the early post-larval shell and confirms the identity of the larvae of A. alba and T. fabula. The veliger and pediveliger larvae of A. alba are described. The similar larval form of the tellinacean bivalves is modified by differential margin growth early in post-larval development. Comparison of these bivalves with allied species reveals that the post-larvae are distinguishable at even the smallest sizes by the shell and hinge form. The metamorphic size of A. alba ranges from 0 26 to 0 31 mm, of T. fabula from 0 25 to 0 28 mm and of D. vittatus from 0 25 to 0 35 mm. The bivalve post-larvae were collected from the shallow sublittoral of Oxwich Bay, Bristol Channel, U.K., and the larvae from the overlying waters, during the years 19802. 14 pp., 7 figs, gr. 8.

Ajouter au panierThe development of O. tetricus embryos reared in the laboratory is described. The course of embryo-genesis is similar to that of O. vulgaris but the shape of stage-time plots differs. Most embryos undergo two reversions during development but failure to reverse does not prevent continued development. Both naturally and artificially hatched embryos still have the internal yolk sac, which is not fully absorbed until 4 or 5 days after hatchnig. Records of egg-laying in the laboratory and of the presence of larvae and juveniles in the wild population indicate that O. tetricus has a prolonged breeding season. 12 pp., 6 figs, gr. 8.

Ajouter au panierNumerous observations of more-or-less precisely dated occurrences of Cainozoic Cuvierinidae allow lineages to be reconstructed. The early genera Spoelia Janssen, 1990 and Jhnjagtia gen. nov. (Late Oligocene/Early Miocene), the roots of which are still unknown, are included in the Cuvierinidae. The late Oligocene Ireneia tenuistriata (Semper, 1861) is the precursor of various Miocene species of Ireneia Janssen 1995. The genus became extinct in the Late Miocene. The genus Cuvierina Boas, 1886 developed from the Ireneia lineage during the Early Miocene. In Middle Miocene times Cuvierina s. lat. splits up into two branches, interpreted here as subgenera, viz. C. (Cuvierina) and C. (Urceolaria) subgen. nov., each with a number of species occuring from the later Miocene onward. The Recent 'C. columnella columnella (Rang, 1827)' and 'C. columnella urceolaris (Morch, 1850)' as interpreted until now, are considered to represent the final stages of these lineages. Recent Cuvierina material from all oceans was revised, which has led to a re-interpretation of extant taxa and to the introduction of two new Recent species. New taxa here introduced are Cuviernina (C.) pacifica spec. nov., C. (Urceolaria) cancapae spec. nov., C. (U.) curryi spec. nov., Ireneia gracilis spec. nov., Johnjagtia gen. nov., and Urceolaria subgen. nov. A neotype is designated for C. (C.) columnella. Two species described from the Eocene of the United States do not fit the development model of the Cuvierinidae advocated here. For them two genera, Praecuvierina gen. nov. and Texacuvierina gen. nov. are introduced. Together they form genera, Praecuvierina fam. nov., which is considered to represent an earlier offshoot from the Creseidae. 48 pp., 36 figs, gr. 8.
