Brown textured boards with black cloth spine stamped with author, title and publisher's imprint in red.The binding is tight. The unclipped dust jacket is fine, and both the jacket and the book were printed in Japan. There are five full-page, polychrome illustrations. This collaborative work was first published in 1691. It takes its title from the opening poem: "First Winter Rain/the monkey wants/a raincoat too". The introduction notes that "Monkey's Raincoat is generally considered to represent the best and most typical of Basho's mature style." There is a 15-page introduction on haiku and Basho's poetics, followed by 76 pages of text and illustrations. This is a great opportunity to acquire a scarce hard cover copy of this 1973 book in excellent condition with a fine unclipped dust jacket.
