Al testo italiano, con a fronte l'originale latino, fanno seguito le annotazioni di carattere tecnico, scientifico e sociologico. Ognuno dei 54 capitoli si avvale di un corredo iconografico, costituito da opere di grandi artisti dal Rinascimento al Settecento, che rappresenta un inventario di quasi tutti i mestieri allora conosciuti. Completano il volume un apparato critico e bibliografico e un saggio di Roberta Turchi sul significato letterario e culturale della più famosa opera di Ramazzini.
