Contemporary dark brown stamped cloth; spine ends chipped; board corners worn; spine's gilt stamping remains fairly bright but not vibrant. Binding is firm. Still an attractive antiquarian copy. Two frontispieces the first being a floor plan of the Sandy Bay penal colony barracks and the second (opposite the title page) being a b/w illustration of "Bark Florida" with the latter retaining is tissue guard sheet. Preface by Cincinnati author E.H. Appleton noting that the book was prepared from Captain Brown's letters and papers. The Library of Congress catalog cites author as Elizabeth Haven Appleton. Charles H. Brown was captain of the New Orleans-based three-masted frigate Florida with the ship hired in October 1851 for a cargo pickup in Rio de Janeiro. Setting sail from Valparaiso Brown consented to a Chilean government request to deliver political prisoners to Sandy Bay in the Strait of Magellan as the location was en route. The book details the Florida's capture by mutinous Chilean army officers led by artillery lieutenant Miguel Jose Cambiaso and Brown's subsequent three month imprisonment by the insurrectionists and his eventual escape in addition to commenting upon the lack of assistance from the British Royal Navy who should have aided the American flagged vessel and its crew.

Ajouter au panier12°, original brown publisher's cloth, spine elaborately gilt, covers stamped in blind (spine ends slightly chipped, slight wear to corners). Light dampstaining (mostly marginal), scattered light foxing. Contemporary owner's signature on front endpaper. Frontispiece, 228 pp., floor plan of the barracks at Sandy Bay. *** FIRST EDITION. Brown was captain of the Florida, an American merchant ship based in New Orleans. In October 1851 the Florida set sail from Valparaiso, intending to pick up cargo in Rio de Janeiro. At the Chilean government's request, Brown agreed to ferry a group of political prisoners, most of them participants in the 1851 rebellion, to the penal colony at Sandy Bay in the Strait of Magellan. On arrival, the Florida was captured by mutinous Chilean officers. Brown describes in considerable detail the insurrection, his three months' imprisonment, and his eventual escape and capture of the mutineers, with bitter comments about the lack of aid he received from British naval vessels. A second edition appeared the same year, and a third - retitled The Sufferings and Escape of Capt. Chas. H. Brown from an Awful Imprisonment by Chilian Convicts, with additional plates - in 1855. Spanish translations were published in Santiago de Chile, 1923 and 1943.*** Palau 36215. Sabin 8459. Not in Briseño. Not in Hill.
