Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, some age-toning and light soiling to edges of text block, very slight bumping to a couple of corners]. (B&W photographs) A valiant attempt by the author to make some sense of the southeastern European region, under what he acknowledges were "the disturbed conditions which prevailed . during the summer and autumn of 1919." Countries which are covered (from the Acknowledgment section, slightly different than the list on the front cover, which includes some cities): Italy, Dalmatia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Turkey, Rumania, Hungary and Serbia. The author was a journalist and a war correspondent prior to the U.S. entry into World War I in April 1917, at which time he was commissioned as a Captain in military intelligence, serving until he was injured in September 1918. It was after leaving the U.S. Armed Services, following a period of convalescence, that he undertook the journey chronicled in this book; the long list of government officials, ministers, even royalty that he cites in his Acknowledgment testify to how well-connected he was -- or maybe, of just how eager some of these nations, in the midst of their post-war suffering, were to make nice with America. During his later career Powell was a successful author of adventure and travel books.
