About very good in the publisher's navy cloth, with the spine dulled, and an ink stain to the top edge (not affecting the interior), lacking the dust jacket. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dawes on the front free endpaper in the year after publication: "For William J. Cram from his friend Charles G. Dawes July 4th 1936." We know little about Cram, but note that some correspondence between him and Dawes is retained in Dawes's archive at Northwestern. Dawes served as Calvin Coolidge's Vice President, and was a general polymath, with accomplishments in diplomacy, music composition, and banking, among other pursuits.

Octavo, 329pp. Three-quarter brown morocco, marbled boards, marbled endpapers. Stated "Published October, 1935" on copyright page. Archival leather reinforcement to hinges, solid text block. Signed on the front free endpaper by former Vice President Charles G. Dawes: "To my dear friend and kinsman / John Dawes Ames / from Charles G. Dawes / Oct. 30th, 1935" Charles G. Dawes served as the 30th Vice President of the United States from 1925 to 1929 under President Calvin Coolidge. Born on August 27, 1865, in Marietta, Ohio, Dawes was a banker, military general, and diplomat before entering the political arena. He developed the Dawes Plan in 1924, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The plan was designed to solve the World War I reparations problem that was stressing the economy of Germany and the international economic system. Prior to his vice presidency, Dawes served in World War I and was the first Director of the Bureau of the Budget in 1921. He passed away on April 23, 1951, in Evanston, Illinois.

Signed on the front free endpaper: "For General and Mrs. McHardy, from their friend, Charles G. Dawes. April 23rd, 1936." Dawes met General A.A. McHardy near the end of World War I, when they were both appointed to the Military Board of Allied Supply, tasked with organizing supply operations between allied powers during the war effort. They remained friends, with Dawes visiting McHardy in Great Britain during his tenure as United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James's.
