Published in French, with frontispiece. Constant tells the story of an alienated young man who grows increasingly isolated from society after he falls in love with an older woman. The novel eschewed contemporary convention for describing the external, and is noted for its detailed exploration of the character's thoughts, feelings, and states of mind. The binding is signed to the bottom edge of the front pastedown by Bumpus, and Oxford based book binders. In a red half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards, with a tiny scuff in the leather to the top edge of the front board. The front joint is very tender, and may fail with further handling. The rear joint is just beginning to crack. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages. Good Only. book.
