Reliure basane racinée d'époque, dos lisses profusément ornés. Pièces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin noir, écussons rouges de tomaisons. Reliures en bon état, usures d'usage aux coins, dos et coiffes, corps d'ouvrage en très bon état, quelques annotations pertinentes au crayon, facilement effaçables, consignées par un érudit dans les années 1930 dans les pages de faux-titre. Les défauts aux reliures seront restaurées dans nos ateliers gratuitement avant livraison. Duclos passait pour le plus bel esprit de France, avant que le mérite supérieur de Voltaire eût triomphé des fureurs de l'envie ; et qui, voyant sa réputation pâlir, mais non point s'effacer, reconnut de bonne grâce son vainqueur, et échappa à la faiblesse trop commune de passer dans le parti de l'envie quand on voit sa gloire s'éloigner. Duclos, en descendant de son piédestal, évita d'être renversé ; il vécut heureux, il mourut considéré, et sa place parait désormais fixée invariablement parmi les écrivains les plus spirituels et les plus utiles du 18ème siècle. Un très bel ensemble qui mérite de figurer dans toutes les bibliothèques qui accordent une place d'honneur au siècle d'or des lettres françaises : le 18ème.

L'uvre la plus célèbre de Duclos (1704-1772), historiographe de France, Secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie française, membre de celle des Inscription et Belles-Lettres est "les Considérations sur les murs de ce siècle" (1751), qui connut un vif succès et fut traduite en anglais et en allemand et souvent rééditée. Elle est écrite avec un style précis, piquant, clair parfois jusqu'à la sécheresse. La peinture des modes et de l'esprit du temps est assez peu vivante. L'auteur disait d'ailleurs avec justesse: "Je ne regarde pas tout, mais ce que je regarde, je le vois bien; je n'ai point de coloris, mais je serai lu."
