Réunion des plus importantes oeuvres de ce grand biologiste que fut Spallanzani, remarquable non seulement pour ses hypothèses, mais pour son imagination en terme de méthode expérimentale. Les opuscules contiennent les Expériences sur la digestion, qui ne se trouvent pas dans l'originale, dans lesquelles Spallanzani démontre l'importance des sucs gastriques dans le processus digestif. Il démontrera également que la théorie de la génération spontanée est fausse, découvre le secret de la fécondation entre un spermatozoïde et un ovule, celui de la régénération chez certains animaux; il réalisera la première insémination artificielle chez une chienne. On lui doit ainsi de nombreuses avancées dans les sciences, dont les effets ne se feront ressentir que bien plus tard, mais surtout il marque son époque par sa rigueur scientifique et ses protocoles de démonstration qui pointent une inventivité et une clairvoyance qui semblent inépuisables. He was one of the first to dispute the doctrine of spontaneous generation, making importent experiments in support of his views. He likewise was the first to advance the doctrine of the regeneration of the spinal cord, and showed the reflex actions. Some of his conclusions were similar to those expressed by Pasteur, nearly a century later.
