La traduzione in latino delle opere di Platone, fatta da Marsilio Ficino, è considerata la più importante di ogni tempo. Il filosofo (1433-99) si dedicò interamente al platonismo quando (1458) Cosimo de' Medici gli accordò, con la sua protezione, anche i mezzi per compiere tali studi. Iniziata la traduzione dei dialoghi platonici nella villa di Careggi (donatagli da Cosimo), egli alternava il lavoro con conversazioni di argomento filosofico, politico, letterario con gli amici. Da queste discussioni ebbe origine l'Accademia platonica.
