Beautifully illustrated article (pp. 478 - 485) on the species of deer originating from China and in the 19th century only preseverd in an imperial hunting park in China. In China it was known as ssu-pu-hsiang, four unlikes, as it was said to have the neck of a camel, the hooves of a cow, the tail of a donkey and the antlers of a deer (Fritz Mühlenweg`s Viernichtgleich). Few anmials were sent in the 19th century by the emperor to European zoos. In China, most of the animals escaped the park, when it was flooded, the rest were killed when European troops plundered the imperial palaces. To enable the species to survive all anmials surviving in Europe were sold to the Duke of Bedford, who was at that time most successfull in breeding them, on his estate around Woburn Abbey - a fascinating story.
