Pages lightly aged but otherwise clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. The Studio was an illustrated magazine of fine and applied art, published in London from 1883 until 1964. It was an important source of arts and crafts news, featuring exhibitions, reviews and lots of pictures.  The Studio also published an excellent special series on Peasant Art in Europe. This is a hard cover edition of Peasant Art in Switzerland by Daniel Baud-Bovy in 1924, translated by Arthur Palliser. The is the fifth volume on Peasant Art published by The Studio, the other four dealing with Sweden, Lapland and Iceland, with Austria-Hungary, Italy and Russia. For Switzerland, Baud-Bovy chose to focus on the Lötschenthal, a remote valley hidden in a fold of the Alps, the only means of access to which is a single mule track. The peasant art to be found here is very characteristic. After a brief introduction dealing with the nature and surroundings of the valley, and the artistic instincts of the inhabitants, Baud-Bovy discusses the various types of peasant's house, which he classifies as Celto-Roman, Italo-Roman, Rheto-Roman, "Plateau" house, and chalet. Detailed illustrations are given of the various types, showing characteristic features of both exteriors and interiors. The book also includes chapters on wood work, costumes, textile art, metal work - wrought iron, pewter, jewellery, and glassware and pottery.
