The three-page foreword precedes thirty-four poems. This copy formerly from the library of author and bibliophile John Baxter, with a receipt to him laid-in.

A remarkable first effort from this 25 year old writer and a clear harbinger of the brilliant works to come. A very sharp copy. Previous owner contemporary signature and date to the front free endpaper. The name is that of Ralph Sargent and I believe this to be Ralph M. Sargent (1904-1985), author and Professor. He earned his PhD at Yale and later joined the faculty of Haverford. His papers now reside at The University of Tennessee. So there is both a Yale and Knoxville, Tennessee connection. This is a lovely copy of the book with only the slightest wear to the ends of the spine. I love this book because it demonstrates so clearly the profound talent of a young author on the cusp of becoming a truly great American author. Near Fine / Near Fine.

The huge successes of the studies earned Riesman the cover of "Time" magazine in 1954, making him the first social scientist to receive the honor.
