Nobbs, the pastor of Pitcairn, and 4 small chart maps, salvaged from a damaged issue of Harper's Monthly, Volume XLII, No. 251, April, 1871. Mostly extracted from the book, The Mutineers Of The Bounty And Their Descendants To Pitcairn And Norfolk Islands, by Lady Belcher, published by Harper's in 1871 in a first American edition. Belcher was a step-daugthter of Peter Heywood, a midshipman on the Bounty, who was wrongfully condemned to death, pardoned, and after rose to a high rank in the British navy. The book itself covers the years 1830 to 1870, but includes a review of the mutiny and Bligh's boat journey. Illustrations in the present item include the wreck of the Pandora, a group portrait of Maria Christian, Ellen Quintal, and Sarah McKoy, landing at Pitcairn Island, the landing place, Sidney Bay, Norfolk Island, the interior of Norfolk, portraits of Naomi and Jane Nobbs, and Pitcairn Settlement at Norfolk Island. The author, Alfred McFarland, was an Irishman whose calling in the legal profession eventually led to him the position of Judge in Australia. McFarland has drawn upon the many versions of events and presents them here with great clarity. He takes the view that both sides, whilst guilty of some heinous deeds, are deserving of credit in part, for the extreme conditions endured and for many their very survival. All aspects of the mutiny, casting adrift, shipwreck, court martials, and the various events on Pitcairn and other Islands are covered. McFarland's approbation of Australia's 'detestation of the cowardly outrages that caused the "Mutiny in the Bounty," and its reverence for the pure and hallowed lives of the "Pitcairn Islanders," who sprung from it.' probably provides a clue as to where his sympathies lie, but for anyone wishing to find out about the mutiny and the far reaching effects that it had this provides a very good insight. He found there a flourishing if poor community who welcomed him so warmly that he professed the weeks to be some of the best of his life. The Islanders were deeply religious and seemingly without vice largely due to the remoteness of the location, but with an indigenous population growing too numerous for the Island's resources to support. This collection was subsequently published with the intention of raising funds for the Islanders and includes a list of all the ships that visited there since 1808 and the despatches of their commanders.
