The play, which debuted in 1948, was based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Heggen. Henry Fonda originated the role of the title character, having been released for a movie contract in order to accept the part, and won the Tony Award as Best Actor. He reprised his role for 1955 film version. The play itself won the Best Play" Tony for 1948.
