The Canadian poet and prose writer Duncan Campbell Scott (1862-1947) worked as a career civil servant, serving as deputy superintendent of the Department of Indian Affairs from 1913 to 1932. In that capacity, he coined the phrase "final solution for the Indian problem" while promoting their cultural assimilation. He is considered one of Canada's Confederation Poets along with Charles G.D. Roberts, Bliss Carman, and Archibald Lampman. Born in England, Leslie G. Chance (1893-1959), moved to Ottawa and was prominent on stage as an actor and manager. He served in the First World War and was wounded at the Battle of Festubert. He was then commissioned as lieutenant and sent to Officer Training School. As Captain of the 28th Canadian Infantry Battalion, he was awarded the Military Cross for Gallantry for his actions at the Battle of the Somme. He later served during the Second World War in different missions for the Canadian, British and U.S. forces for which he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The pair self published six small booklets/broadsides to give to friends at Christmas time between 1890 - 98. Tiny, single sheet broadside measures (when opened) approximately 9" x 7." Folded in half and then in half again, presumably to put in a Christmas card. Poems are printed side by side and include "A Song" by Scott and "Earth: The Stoic" by Lampman. Both authors have signed their names under their respective poems. A beautiful copy of this fragile item, which came out four years after his first book, "Among The Millet (1888) and precedes his second book, Lyrics of Earth (1895) by three years. Lampman and Scott were prominent figures in 19th Canadian poetry, both belonging to the group of poets known as the Confederation Poets. They shared a close literary friendship, with Scott even acting as Lampman's literary executor after his death, helping to publish and edit his work. It almost?goes without saying, that this item is exceedingly rare.
