As Captain of the 28th Canadian Infantry Battalion, he was awarded the Military Cross for Gallantry for his actions at the Battle of the Somme. He later served during the Second World War in different missions for the Canadian, British and U.S. forces for which he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
