An important clandestine Jansenist volume, published under the false Pierre Marteau imprint of Cologne in 1700. The work brings together Antoine Arnauldâs celebrated Instructions sur la Grâce (one of the central theological statements of the Jansenist movement) with Martin de Barcosâ exposition on grace and predestination, both core issues in the bitter controversies opposing Jansenists to Jesuits and the Roman Church hierarchy in the 17th century. Preceded by an impressive engraved frontispiece depicting St. Augustine enthroned with crozier, halo, and the motto Veritas, symbolizing the Augustinian doctrine of grace central to Jansenism. This copy with two layers of rich provenance: ownership inscriptions of âAug. Collinâ and another hand, as well as extensive manuscript notes on the system of Grace (âSystà me de la Grâceâ) at the front, showing engagement with the bookâs contested theology. The binding is contemporary calf, worn and splitting, but still holding; text block clean, margins generous. The engraved frontispiece is present, though folded and with tears along folds. A solid survival of a book that was frequently suppressed and destroyed. The Marteau imprint is especially significant: in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, politically or religiously dangerous books were often given the fictional Cologne address of Pierre Marteau to evade censorship. Such editions are today collected as examples of the âRepublic of Lettersâ in opposition to official orthodoxy.
