Includes much on the mining districts of Nevada and eastern California. "Wheeler conducted the first official explorations of southern Nevada's interior area. His corps of engineers contributed to the report concerning the climate, geology, wildlife, the Indians and white settlement of southern Nevada in 1871. The map contains dozens of place names and is in itself a significant record. A valuable report." (Paher).
