This series of papers is the result of a conference entitled Prevention of and Protection Against Accidental Explosion of Munitions, Fuels and Other Hazardous Mixtures, held by The New York Academy of Sciences on October 10, 11, 12, and 13, 1966. Among the major areas covered were Protective Design Technology, Safety Planning, Personnel Sensitivity, Sensitive of Explosive Materials, Explosive Effects, Design and Construction of Protective Structures, Case Studies of Protective Construction, Explosive Characteristics, Testing--Instrumention, Testing--Structure Testing, and Civil Defense. Among the key authors/presenters were Clayton S. White and William Durkee. Among specific topics addressed are Explosive Safety, Explosive Facilities, Propellants, Underground Explosions, Blast Attenuation, Mine Defusing, Air Blast, Explosive Containment, Sympathetic Detonation, and Silo testing. Edward Cohen was the former CEO of Ammann & Whitney. He was a Society of American Military Engineers Fellow. Cohen spent over 55 years in research, design, and hardened design and tower analysis. Cohen aided in the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and the United States Capitol building. He was recognized with the 1974 Civil Engineering State of the Art award, 1987 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award, 1976 Raymond Reese award, 1983 Ernest Howard Gold Medal,&1987 Service to People award.
