One of the most distinguished writers of his time, Browne (1605-1682) was a native of London. He got his medical degree and received several doctorates. He spent his life working as a doctor in Norwich. His Religio Medici (1642) is more a philosophical work than a defense of the medical profession. The present work is an inquiry into vulgar errors that have become part of the popular knowledge of the study of history, theology, mechanical arts, and medicine. The second edition of Browne's Christian Morals (1756) included a life and explanatory notes by Dr. Samuel Johnson.
