En 1907, Dreyfus, quand il rédige cet envoi à Proust empreint d'une profonde sympathie, est un auteur reconnu pour ses essais : La Vie et les prophéties du Comte Gobineau publié deux ans plus tôt lui a valu un prix de l'Académie française. Proust, quant à lui, s'attelle alors à la rédaction de son grand uvre, À la recherche du temps perdu, mais n'a encore qu'une modeste réputation d'écrivain. L'amitié entre les deux hommes traverse les décennies, comme en témoigne leur correspondance, entamée dès 1888 et poursuivie jusqu'en 1920.
